| Yearly general meeting of 'Samarthan Mahila Sangh' |
| Recently yearly genearl meeting of samarthan mahila sangh was held on 19th May 2009 at bhavnagar. In meeting, last year's progress was analyzed and next year's tasks were planned. Chief guest in the meeting was Vimlaben solanki - Chairman of district social justice committee. Nearly 250 women were present in the meeting. The group works mainly for savings and microfinance. |

| PLC believes that for the development of coastal region; an integrated programme covering crop production, fisheries, animal husbandry and forestry, providing for improvement in infrastructural facilities including communication, water and sanitation together with active participation of communities especially women and existing local institutions based on sharing values of human rights, equity and justice would revitalize coastal local livelihoods. |

| The PLC’s mission is to work towards ensuring livelihood security of coastal
communities, particularly those susceptible to salinity, droughts, cyclones as well as
social discriminations, in a manner that integrates their experiences and rights from a
gender based perspective, with sustainable natural resource management and disaster
mitigation. |

Disaster Mitigation
|
|
| Across coastal area the vulnerability to climatic change and disasters is high.There is loss to properties and lives, drinking water, electricity supply and livelihood are affected.Local communities have been coping and adapting to such disasters over years. The lessons learnt by coastal communities on adaptation and livelihood resilience in disaster risk reduction and post-disaster recovery processes over a period of years can help other communities to benefit from it. |

About Utthan
|
| Utthan is an NGO based in Gujarat has been working in Panchmahal and Dahod districts of the tribal belt in Gujarat and Bhavnagar and Amreli districts of coastal Saurashtra, covering about 173 villages through local community teams to improve livelihood through INRM and gender sensitive approach.The focus of Utthan's interventions are on Gender Empowerment, Livelihood Security and Conflict Transformation within the wider framework of promoting gender equality and equity, human rights and improving the quality of life for those on the margins of society.Utthan focus on dalits, religious minorities, adivasis and poor. |

Youth Mobilization

| Main broad objectives perceived to work with youth groups are Violence and conflict resolution over natural resources, Youth group sensitization on gender and communal conflicts, Formation of society with equality, peace and happiness And to develope long term skill based area resource groups and capacity building of the group to take ahead developement process in the area. |

Women Empowerment

|
‘Gender’ refers to roles and responsibilities of women and men that are created in our families, our societies and our cultures. ‘Empowerment’ is the freedom of choice and it means increasing one’s authority and control over the resources and decisions that affect one’s life.
PLC's major activities for women empowerment are: 1. Building women’s institutions to initiate a grassroots women’s movement.
2. Providing access to safe, reliable and sufficient water, sanitation and hygiene.
3.Encouraging savings, credit and income generation activities for economic empowerment 4.Building women and vulnerable community’s access to resources, land and property ownership and rights.
5.Strengthening women’s participation in governance through Panchayati Raj. |

Peace and Justice
|
|
| The main focus of the program is on social justice for vulnerable women. The Nyay Samiti has been started to deal with violence cases.
PLC members make field visit to raise awareness on Law and the work of samiti, link up with villege womens' groups and provide counseling
support to victims and support them in bringing the issue of gender based violence from the private sphere of family/household into public domain.
The peace program also includes capacity building of leaders through paralegal trainings, feminist perspective on gender and law, strategies of
working with men and youth and dealing with law-giving structures like police and court. |
